Sedation Dentistry Overview – Dr. Robert Odegard
If you feel anxious about visiting the dentist – or avoid seeking dental treatment because you fear discomfort in the dentist’s chair – sedation dentistry may be an excellent option. Dr. Robert Odegard provides a number of sedation dentistry options, each of which helps reduce or eliminate patients’ anxiety before their dental procedure. When you secure our services, we will help you select the option that will best meet your unique needs.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry refers to the use of sedatives to minimize a patient’s anxiety before or at the beginning of a dental procedure. Dental sedatives induce a relaxed state in which patients are often blissfully unaware of their dental procedure. Depending on the type of medication a patient selects, the sedative effect may be more pronounced; some sedatives simply decrease patients’ awareness of anxiety, while others induce unconsciousness during treatment. As such, sedation dentistry can be a life-changing option for patients whose dental anxiety makes it difficult to obtain dental care.

Sedation Dentistry Options
Dr. Robert Odegard provides the following sedation dentistry options:
Oral conscious sedation dentistry – delivers sedation via a pill, which the patient takes approximately one hour before the dental appointment. Achieves a moderate sedative effect in which the patient can breathe independently and respond to stimuli.
Inhalation sedation dentistry – delivers sedation via inhaled nitrous oxide gas (“laughing gas”). Achieves a mild sedative effect in which the patient is conscious and can respond to stimuli.
General anesthesia – delivers sedation, typically via intravenous injection or inhaled gas. Achieves a deep sedation in which the patient is unconscious and has little or no memory of the procedure.
